Earlier, I should have not given him any cold yogurt drink, which made him worst. Nevertheless, his cough had gotten worst. Also, I stop giving him fruits, which contain sugar that can cause mucus. And, according to Chinese medicine fruits are cooling items unless the fruit is cooked. Then, I gave him lots of bone broth to have. Not only that, I made him lots of pear drink to soothe his throat.

Ingredients:

2 Asian Pears (can use other ones like Bosc or Bartlett)

3 dried figs

1 small to medium size rock sugar

Instructions:

  1. First, rinse the pears. Then, peel and remove the core, then cut into chunks. Next, set aside. Following, take a small to a medium-sized pot and fill it with water. And, add pears and dried figs. Let it cook in the high setting.
  2. Hence, after 20 minutes turn down the heat. Let it simmer.
  3. Turn off in about half an hour. And then, let it cool.
  4. Before serving, warm slightly in the microwave. Do not drink it is cold because it will trigger coughing.

Pear Drink

Not only does pear helps with the coughing the rock sugar help as well by hydrating the throat. This drink is good for children and is safe to have. Above all, the soup nourishes the lungs. Also, it is good for dry throat, which happens during the wintertime due to the heat. Or, even just from regular dryness. Not only that, this soup will benefit by having other ingredients such as dates, longan, and sweet bitter almond. In particular, the pear is great for digestion. For those who do not enjoy a sweet drink, this can be made with pork bone a more of a salty flavor.

Ingredients:

100 g red bean

50g barley

1 small clump of crystal rock sugar

Instructions:

  1. To start, soak the red bean for 1/2 hour to 1 hour.
  2. Next, wash the barley. Then, pan fry barley.
  3. Thus, in a slow cooker add in barley and red bean. Hence, let it slow cook for 4 hours.
  4. After 4 hours, add rock sugar to the pot. Stir. Last but not least, the sugar should melt in 15minutes.
  5. Moreover, scoop in a bowl. And, let it cool.
  6. Enjoy.

Soothing Honeysuckle Tea. My mom has a honeysuckle plant by her front door. The aroma is a sweet and a very pleasant smell, which reminds of honey. I love the smell. This plan blooms in the summertime. There are various colors for the flower from white, yellow, to pink. This plant is quite big because it has a lot of vines with lots of flowers.

1/4 cup of honeysuckle flower

1 cup of water

1 – 2 tsp of honey

Instructions:

  1. Soak the flowers to clean them. Let the flower soak for 15 mins – 30 mins. Rinse. Place in a strainer.
  2. Boil 1 cup of water.
  3. Place the flower leaf in a cup. Pour boiled water. Let it sit for 15 minutes – 20 minutes. Then, remove the flowers.
  4. Add in the honey. Stir.
  5. Enjoy!

Note: The tea can be made in large amounts. They can be stored in the fridge. Honeysuckle tea can be drunk cold or hot.

Chinese Parsley to Soothe Itchy Skin

During the time Charchar was dealing with her skin rash or her eczema. We did not know what Charchar is allergic to or what she is sensitive to. She would scratch her skin, it could be due to the things she eats on a daily basis we don’t know. I am constantly guessing what is making her itchy. It is tough. I made her a bath soak to help soothe her skin.

Chinese Parsley Bath

Ingredients:

1 bunch of organic Chinese parsley

500ml water

Instruction:

  1. In a large pot, fill half the pot with half a pot of water. Let it boil
  2. Once the water boils, add in Chinese parsley. Let it simmer.
  3. Let it cook for 1/2 an hour to 1 hour.
  4. Turn off the heat. Let it cool. Then, fill bath water. Pour in the strained Chinese parsley water. Mix with the bath water.

The Affect

I gave Charchar a bath with the Chinese Parsley water every day, it helps to cool the redness from her skin. The skin does not seem as irritated. Charchar seems to scratch less than before. Tip: whenever she would want to scratch, I would give her an ice pack to help with the itchiness.

This week, it has been a tough week for my whole family. My kids and I caught the flu. We were quite sick that we stayed in bed most of the time. My kids were hot with cold hands they were complaining that they were constantly cold. The kids and I were having a bad fever. They did not want to eat; the best way is a warm bowl of congee something I grew up with.

Plain Congee

Creamy Congee

1 1/2 cup jasmine rice

2 quarts chicken stock

1 quartz water

2-3 slice of ginger

2 scallion(cut thinly slice)

4 boneless chicken thigh

salt

Instructions:

  1. In a slow cooker, add rice stock, water, ginger and scallions. Cover to cook on high. Mix well. Once the rice soften. Turn down the heat.
  2. Throw in ginger. Cut up chicken thigh into slices. Turn the heat on low, add in the chicken. Cover the crockpot. Once chicken becomes cooked and it changes in color, the chicken should be ready.
  3. Season the congee with salt.
  4. Enjoy!

100g dried bean curd skin

8 cups of water

100g sugar (or you can choose rock sugar)

2 eggs (beaten)

Direction:

  1. Soak the bean curd skin to soften in water for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Fill a pot with water. Allow boiling. Add in the dried bean curd.
  3. Turn down the heat. Cook the bean curd for 30 minutes. Stir regularly.
  4. Add sugar. Let it simmer for 3 minutes.
  5. Pour the beaten eggs into the dessert. Sir.
  6. Allow the dessert to cook for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Turn off the heat.
  8. Allow the dessert to cool.

  2. Tea helps with liver health by increasing the movement of bile. Therefore, it helps to remove toxins. Improve issue with eye and skin.
  3. You can replace coffee with dandelion tea. However, it really depends how much of a coffee lover are you? You can grow your own. If you want to grow on your own or in your garden. It is best if you buy a plant from a market or places where they sell plants. Do not take the wild ones from your lawn. Or buy dandelion tea from the store.

After you have grown a dandelion plant in your garden, try to make dandelion tea:

  1. Firstly, you wash the leaves.
  2. Once the leaves are cleaned without any dirt. You can put them in the sun to dried it out.
  3. After the leaves are very dehydrated.
  4. You can roast the leaves in a pan.
  5. Turn on medium heat. After the pan is hot, you can put in the dandelion leaves.
  6. Stir constantly to prevent burning.
  7. Let it roast for twenty minutes to half an hour. Then, turn off the heat.

If you have any of the above issues, you can take out the leaves and add hot water to make tea. You can add honey if the tea is too bitter.

My Mom had some swelling in her joints; she has arthritis swelling of the joints. After having some dandelion tea for three or four weeks, she noticed one of her joints the swelling is gone. Dandelion tea is definitely a very useful tea with many benefits.

Make sure the fish has bright eyes, medium sticky gills, and the skin has a glossy sheen appearance. We like to add some warmth to the dish by adding a couple of slices of ginger.

3 slices ginger

1 tbsp low sodium soy sauce

500g fish fillet (slice 1 cm)

1 bag enoki mushroom

1 tsp sesame oil

1 1/2 c bok choi

1/2 cup coriander

2 tbsp onion scallion

Instructions:

  1. Wash bok choi. Slice bok choi across into smaller chunks.
  2. In the pot, boil water. Add ginger and soy sauce. Stir.
  3. Lower the heat. Add fish. Let it simmer for 1 minute.
  4. Add mushroom. Simmer for 1 minute.
  5. Put in sesame oil.
  6. Remove from the stove.

Winter Melon and Pork Shank Soup

1lb pork bone

1/2 lb pork shank

1L water

3 slice ginger

1 black silkie chicken

1 bunch peanut

salt and pepper

300g winter melon(peeled, removed seed, cut into cubes

Instruction:

1.    Boil pot of water. Blanch pork shank and black silkie chicken. Note: blanching removes impurities). Pour out the water.

2.    Boil second pot of water. Add pork bone and black silkie chicken. Then, add ginger and peanut.

3.    After the water bubbles, let it simmer on low heat for 1 hr.

4.    Add winter melon. Let it cook for 30minutes.

5.    Add salt and pepper for taste.

6.    Let soup to cool.

 

 

Nutriton Soup for your Eyes

We are always in front of a screen. It can be very exhausting for your eyes. There can be a lot of strain on your eyes without knowing. My husband works a lot. He is always in front of a computer at work and when he returns home from work he is working on his teaching on his computer. When he takes a break; he is on his cell phone. We are quite used to our screen time sometimes forget about that. In our society, everything is on a screen we forget that we need to take care of our eyes. Or, how this can be exhausting for your eyes. Therefore, in spring and summer time, I try to make Gao Gei soup. My Mom grows Gau gei plant.  She always gives me some soup or gives me stems of gau gei so I can make soup at home. Gau gei comes from goji berry plant. The weather in British Columbia doesn’t produce goji berries. Gau gei is easy to plant. You just need to put the stem of the plant in some dirt and water regularly. Water twice a day. Also, the Gau gei plant needs a good amount of sunlight. The Gau gei soup helps to improve and maintain good eyesight. The process to make the soup is quick not like the typical Chinese soup where you are required to cook for four to five hours. If you don’t have a lot of time, this is a great soup.

Gau Gei Soup

10 stalk of gau gei

1 L water

1 salt egg

Instruction:B

  1. Soak the stem and leaves. Peel all leaves and separate from stem.
  2. Fill the pot with water. Once the water boils. Add the stem and leaves in the pot. Boil for 1-2minutes. Remove leaves. You can eat the leaves.
  3. Add salt egg.
  4. Let it cook for 5 min.
  5. Cool to drink.
